Taking Gilenya can raise your risk of developing a serious brain infection known as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML. When a patient gets this infection, it may seem like it’s simply MS getting worse. However, it requires immediate medical attention. If you have memory loss, confusion, weakness, loss of balance, clumsiness, seizures, or difficulty with walking or talking, get medical help. This infection is rare, but it can be fatal.
Precautions of Gilenya
If you take certain medications for heart rhythm, you shouldn’t take this medication. If you’ve had any type of serious heart condition over the last six months, you also shouldn’t take it. These conditions can include stroke, heart failure, mini-stroke, heart rhythm disorders, heart attack, and chest pain. Gilenya can slow down your heart rate, so you usually have to take the first dose while your rhythm is being monitored.
Because this medication reduces the action of the immune system, it’s possible to more easily get infections while taking it. Some of these infections can be serious. Once you stop taking this medication, you will still have a higher risk of infections for two months. It’s possible to contract tuberculosis, shingles, and pneumonia.
This medication can cause you to have more sensitivity to light as well as eye conditions such as seeing unusual colors, a blind spot, blurry vision, seeing shadows, and eye pain. These may happen about three to four months after you first take Gilenya.
You shouldn’t take Gilenya if you have an allergy to it or if you have severe heart failure that has required hospitalization.
