For patients who have high blood pressure, a medication is often needed to bring the pressure down. Zestoretic is one of these medications that can help with high blood pressure. This medication is a combination of two drugs- hydrochlorothiazide and lisinopril. Both of these active ingredients work together to have a favorable effect.
The ingredient hydrochlorothiazide is a kind of thiazide diuretic. These are often called water pills because they can rid the body of excess fluid. This ingredient keeps your body from absorbing too high an amount of salt. Absorbing too much can cause fluid to be retained. The ingredient lisinopril is a type of drug called an ACE inhibitor. ACE is an abbreviation of angiotensin converting enzyme. It’s used for lowering blood pressure as well as getting rid of excess fluid.
Patients who have high blood pressure are more at risk for problems such as heart attacks, kidney problems, and strokes. Getting your blood pressure lower can cut the risk of these and other health problems and events. Taking this medication will allow patients to pass more urine, and this rids the body of excess water and salt. Zestoretic is usually prescribed when another medication isn’t working to lower your blood pressure enough. It takes about two to four weeks for the medication to give patients the full benefit.

Precautions and Warnings of Zestoretic
When patients take Zestoretic, there is the risk of certain health problems. It’s important for your doctor to take your full medical history, as some patients are at a higher risk than others of having problems with this medication.
It’s important not to use this drug during pregnancy. This medication can cause serious harm to babies and can even be fatal. If you’re taking this medication and you find out that you’re pregnant, stop taking this medication and call your doctor right away. If you’re already pregnant, make sure the doctor knows this so a safe way to control your blood pressure can be found.
Patients who take this medication also have the risk of angioedema, or swelling. If you’ve ever had angioedema before, or you’re Black, you will have a higher risk of this complication occurring. It’s rare for this to happen, but it can be very serious when it does. It causes the body to have swelling in various places such as the tongue, throat, or face. This can be a life-threatening problem that makes it much harder to breathe. If this happens, stop the medication and call for immediate medical treatment.
Low blood pressure is another possibility with this drug. Patients are more likely to have this occur if they don’t have high enough water or salt levels or vomit or have diarrhea persistently. If you’re taking a high diuretic dose, the risk is also elevated. Taking this medication can cause too much of a lowering of blood pressure, and this can be dangerous. It can cause you to feel lightheaded, tired, and dizzy. This complication is more common when a patient first begins taking this medication or when the doctor raises their dose. While taking this medication, be sure to drink enough water. If you get tired, faint, dizzy, or confused, tell your doctor right away.
This medication can also lead to kidney damage in some patients. If you have kidney problems, severe heart failure, or a history of heart valve narrowing, you’re at a higher risk of this happening. The doctor may monitor you for kidney problems while you’re taking Zestoretic. Patients who get kidney problems or make their existing ones worse may be taken off this medication by their doctor. If you’re not urinating as much as you usually do, talk to your doctor right away. This can be a major sign of kidney problems.
If you’ve ever been allergic to this medication or to another ACE inhibitor, make sure your doctor knows. You might not be able to take this medication. Also tell your doctor if you’re allergic to sulfa drugs.
There can be changes in blood sugar, cholesterol, and electrolyte levels while taking Zestoretic. This drug can change all of these things, so you may need to be monitored while you take this medication. You will likely need to do bloodwork regularly while you’re on this medication. If your electrolyte levels change, you may experience muscle pain, vomiting, weakness, a rapid heartbeat, nausea, and other symptoms.
You may also have a risk of developing vision problems from this medication. When patients experience this, it’s usually anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks after they’ve started this drug. If you notice any changes in your vision, or your eyes hurt, stop taking this medication and call your doctor right away. Sometimes, surgery is needed to avoid permanent vision problems.
It’s rare, but it’s possible for some patients who take Zestoretic to develop lupus or to make their existing lupus worse. If you feel highly tired and there’s a rash on your nose and cheeks, tell your doctor right away.
