Brilinta is a prescription antiplatelet medicine used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in certain people with coronary artery disease, including those with acute coronary syndrome or a prior heart attack. It is usually taken with low-dose aspirin and is not a rescue medicine for chest pain.

Brilinta Key Facts
What Brilinta is
A prescription antiplatelet tablet that helps prevent platelets from sticking together and forming harmful clots.
What it’s used for
To lower the risk of serious “clot-related” events such as heart attack and stroke in eligible patients with coronary artery disease, including after certain heart events or procedures.
How it works
It blocks a platelet signaling pathway (P2Y12) so platelets are less likely to clump and form clots inside blood vessels.
Brilinta Safety Overview
Brilinta increases the risk of bleeding because it reduces the blood’s ability to clot. Bleeding can be serious and may be life-threatening.
Brilinta Warnings & Precautions
Tell your prescriber about any upcoming surgery or dental work, and seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop or signs of internal bleeding.
Do not use Brilinta if:
- You have active bleeding
- You have a history of bleeding in the brain (intracranial hemorrhage)
- You have had a serious allergic reaction to ticagrelor or an ingredient in the product
Key warnings to know
- Higher risk of bleeding, including serious bleeding
- Do not change your aspirin dose without your prescriber’s direction, because higher daily aspirin doses are not recommended with Brilinta
- Shortness of breath can occur in some people and should be discussed if it is new or worsening
- Stopping Brilinta too early can increase clot risk, especially after recent heart events or stent placement
Side Effects and When to Get Help
Most side effects relate to bleeding risk. Some people also notice shortness of breath (especially early in treatment). Get urgent medical help for coughing up blood, vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, severe headache, weakness on one side, or any bleeding that will not stop.
Possible side effects may include
- Easy bruising
- Nosebleeds
- Bleeding gums
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
Get urgent help right away for
- Bleeding that will not stop
- Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
- Red or black stools
- Sudden severe headache, confusion, trouble speaking, or weakness (possible bleeding in the brain)
Interactions
Brilinta has important interactions that can raise bleeding risk or change how well it works. Bring a full medication list to your prescriber, including over-the-counter pain relievers and supplements.
Interactions to review with your prescriber may include
- Blood thinners and other antiplatelet medicines, because bleeding risk increases when combined
- NSAID pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen, because they can increase bleeding risk
- Strong CYP3A inhibitors that can raise ticagrelor levels, such as ketoconazole, clarithromycin, and some HIV medicines
- Strong CYP3A inducers that can lower ticagrelor effect, such as rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital
- Simvastatin or lovastatin, because ticagrelor can raise their levels at higher statin doses
- Digoxin, because ticagrelor can raise digoxin levels in some patients
- Certain antidepressants (SSRIs and SNRIs), because they can add to bleeding risk
