Breo Ellipta Key Facts
What Breo Ellipta is
A combination inhaler with two medicines
An inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) to reduce airway inflammation
A long-acting bronchodilator (LABA) to keep airway muscles relaxed
What it’s used for
COPD maintenance treatment to help prevent and control symptoms
Asthma maintenance treatment (age eligibility and strength depend on age and prescription)
How it works
The steroid component helps calm inflammation that contributes to long-term airway narrowing. The bronchodilator component helps keep airways open over the full day to improve breathing control.
Breo Ellipta Safety Overview
Breo Ellipta is for daily control, not fast relief. Using it incorrectly can delay urgent treatment during a flare.
Breo Ellipta Warnings & Precautions
Contact your prescriber if symptoms worsen, rescue inhaler use increases, or breathing worsens right after a dose.
Do not use Breo Ellipta if:
- You have had a serious allergic reaction to any ingredient
- You have a severe milk protein allergy (the powder contains lactose with milk proteins)
Key warnings to know
- Not for sudden breathing problems
- Can cause a serious “worsening right after use” breathing reaction in rare cases
- Can increase pneumonia risk in COPD patients
- Can cause oral thrush if you do not rinse after use
- Can affect heart rate and blood pressure in susceptible patients
Side Effects and When to Get Help
Most side effects happen in the mouth and airways, such as throat irritation or thrush. Some effects can involve the rest of the body, especially in people with heart conditions or frequent steroid exposure. Get urgent help for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, or swelling of the face or throat.
Possible side effects may include
- Sore throat, hoarseness, cough
- Oral thrush
- Headache
- Fast heartbeat or feeling shaky
Get urgent help right away for
- Severe wheezing or shortness of breath right after dosing
- Chest pain, fainting, severe palpitations
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble breathing
Interactions
Interaction risk is mainly from medicines that raise steroid/LABA exposure or add similar bronchodilator effects. Tell your prescriber about all inhalers, heart medicines, antidepressants, and antifungal or antiviral medicines before starting Breo Ellipta.
Interactions to review with your prescriber may include:
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors which can increase fluticasone exposure and side effects
- Other LABA medicines which can increase heart and side effect risk
- Beta blockers which can reduce bronchodilator effect and worsen breathing in some patients
- Certain diuretics which can increase low potassium risk when combined with LABAs
- MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants which can increase cardiovascular effects
