Most patients start by being given a dosage of 0.75 mg per week for the first four weeks after starting Trulicity. This dose may be increased for the following four weeks to 1.5 mg doses if more glycemic control is found to be needed. Patients may additionally have their doses increased to 3 mg each for the following four weeks if their doctor finds that they still need more glycemic control. The largest dose would be an increase to 4.5 mg after those four weeks if the doctor still finds a higher dose is necessary. Patients usually stay on their largest dose for the remainder of their treatment. These are the only four available doses. Doses should only be changed with medical supervision. Doctors may have different dosing recommendations for each person based on their response and how well their body is reacting to the medication.
Some patients may try getting Trulicity prescription just so they can lose weight. However, it is not specifically approved for this use. Weight loss is one of the biggest benefits that have been found for patients taking this medication. It is considered a secondary benefit. There has been a study done that supports this called “AWARD-11.” This study was held over a 52-week period. The first group was given a 1.5 mg dose and the second group was given a 3 mg dose. The last group was given the highest dose at 4.5 mg.
The participants in the AWARD-11 trial were given their dose once per week. The results of the trial found that higher doses corresponded with more weight loss. Those on the 1.5 mg dose lost an average of 6.6 lbs and those on the 3 mg dose lost an average of 8.4 lbs. The patients on the highest dose lost the most weight with an average of 10.1 lbs. These weights are just the averages and may vary on a case-by-case basis depending on the patient. Weight loss should never be the sole use for Trulicity.
Trulicity has also been approved for use in children who are aged at least 10 years old and have type 2 diabetes. Child patients may only be prescribed lower doses of the medication. These patients usually still get the same starting dose as adults—0.75 mg. This dose may be increased to a maximum dose of 1.5 mg over time. Any doses higher than that are still not approved for pediatric use.
Trulicity comes in the form of a subcutaneous injection. It can be injected into the stomach or thigh. It can also be injected into the upper portion of the arm. The site of injection is usually instructed to be rotated weekly. This prevents damage to the surrounding tissue. The medication may be taken at any time of day. It still must be taken on the same day each week. Patients also do not necessarily need to eat food before taking this medication. Patients who miss their dose should take their missed dose as soon as possible as long as it is three days or more before the next dose is supposed to be taken. Patients taking Trulicity may experience some side effects. Some of the most common side effects include upset stomach. Some patents also experience diarrhea or vomiting. They may also experience a loss of appetite and abdominal pain. Other common side effects include fatigue and indigestion. All of these symptoms are common and are not usually serious.
There are also some more rare but serious risks associated with taking Trulicity. Some patients may develop thyroid C-cell tumors. Patients are at increased risk for this if they have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. This may be a personal history or a family history. Any unusual symptoms should be reported to the patient’s healthcare provider immediately to determine the next best course of action.
Every patient has a different medical background and health profile. Some patients may also be taking additional medications. Healthcare professionals take all of this into account before giving patients their prescription. Their prescribed amount of medication is reflected by this and it is important for patients to adhere to that schedule. Weight loss often occurs as a result of patients taking Trulicity. This is a secondary benefit and should not be the only reason for the patient taking the medication.
