Albuterol and Flovent are both medications that can help treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. They have similar uses, but there are a lot of differences between them. Each works in a different way to help people to breathe better. They use different ingredients that act in different ways to relieve breathing problems.
The principal difference between them is that Albuterol is a short-acting medication while Flovent is a long-acting medication. They each have a different effect on the airways to make them more transparent so that more air can be taken in. Both medicines are inhalers that allow patients to inhale particles of the medication by mouth. The drug inside the inhaler may be a powder or an aerosol.

Albuterol is a medication that is made to be fast-acting and lasts for only a short time. It can be found in inhalers such as the Proair Respiclick. It’s also called salbutamol. It treats asthma and the chronic bronchospasms that it causes. This drug acts on the beta-2 adrenergic receptors and causes the bronchial muscle cells to relax. This expands the airways so that more air can come into the lungs. Albuterol also stops mast cells from releasing hypersensitivity mediators to help with breathing. There are a number of different doses of this medication that are available. Your doctor will take several factors into consideration, including the severity of the disease, when prescribing a dosage for you.
This drug is classified as a bronchodilator. Once the medication has been inhaled, it gets absorbed from the lungs right into the patient’s bloodstream in about five to 10 minutes. Once inhaled, this medication gets to work quickly to open the airways. Its effects can last as long as six hours. It’s often given to a patient as their only inhalation drug. However, it may be just one of multiple inhalation drugs that a patient needs to take.
Albuterol is the generic medication that is available under several brand names. It’s used as a treatment for patients who are wheezing or are short of breath because of asthma or COPD. It is approved for use in patients who are four years and older.
The side effects of this medication can include nervousness, insomnia, tremors, high blood pressure, nausea, and hypokalemia (low potassium). Nervousness, tremors, and feeling jittery are most often found in young children who take this medication. About 20% of people who take it will experience tremors. About 10% will have nausea or insomnia. There may also be serious, much rarer symptoms such as a fever, dizziness, higher blood pressure, vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, and nosebleeds.

Often called a rescue inhaler, albuterol has an effect on breathing quickly. Because of the quick action of albuterol, the inhalers are used for rescue when someone is currently having an asthma attack. In some cases, it also may be used preventatively. Asthma attacks can start very suddenly and without warning. An attack is often caused by an allergen or by an irritant. If you already know what the irritant is, you can use albuterol before you have to interact with it to help prevent an attack.
Albuterol comes in a number of different strengths. The severity of your asthma and your history of it often determine which dosage the doctor prescribes for you. Albuterol can be taken in two different forms: a nebulizer solution and an inhaler.
The inhaler has metered doses and delivers the right amount of medication with a puff of the device. The cartridge containing the medication is pushed down, and the medication is inhaled through the mouthpiece.
The other way to take it is through a nebulizer. This is also a liquid medication, but it isn’t inhaled through an inhaler. The medication is fed into the nebulizer, and it is turned into a fine mist. Patients then inhale the mist either through a mouthpiece or a mask. This is often done for serious asthma attacks to get the airways opened quickly.
There are some health conditions that may mean you aren’t able to take albuterol. These include having low potassium levels, an overactive thyroid, any type of heart disease, seizures, and diabetes. It’s usually not recommended that pregnant or breastfeeding women take this medication. However, if it’s highly needed, the doctor may find that the benefits of using it
outweigh the risks.
Flovent is also a treatment for asthma and COPD, but it’s used very differently. Instead of giving patients fast help during an asthma attack, it’s a long-acting medication that prevents attacks and keeps them from being as severe. It can’t be used to stop an asthma attack that is already in progress. It is taken daily to help prevent shortness of breath and wheezing before it starts. For it to be effective, patients have to use it every day as prescribed. It’s common for doctors to prescribe both Flovent and albuterol so that the risk of asthma attacks is cut and there is a rescue inhaler available just in case.
Flovent is the brand of a medication called fluticasone propionate. This drug is a type of corticosteroid used for asthma, COPD, non-allergic rhinitis, and bronchitis. Sometimes, it’s used when people have too much potassium in their blood because this drug lowers potassium levels. This medication activates the body’s glucocorticoid receptors. It also reduces the inflammation of the airways in the lungs so that there is less irritation and swelling in the bronchial tubes.
This medication is available in several different formulations and strengths. It comes as either an aerosol inhaler or a powder inhaler, called a diskus. The inhaler contains a metered dose delivered in a puff of the inhaler. The powder version comes with a diskus that contains the dry powder. To use this version, the patient has to inhale deeply to get the medication.
When the inhaler is first used, it has to be primed and shaken. Shake it for about five seconds before each use. To prime it, you’ll need to press down on the canister a few times to get the medication flowing. Do this away from your face. If you drop the inhaler or stop using it for a week, you must prime it again.
As a maintenance medication, Flovent can be highly effective for treating asthma and COPD breathing problems. Because it keeps the airways open, it reduces the patient’s risk of asthma attacks. There are a few side effects that may come with its use. These include headaches, cough, hoarseness, dizziness, rhinitis, nausea, and throat irritation or infection. It can also cause candidiasis, a fungal infection of the mouth called thrush. This can often be avoided by rinsing your mouth with water after inhaling. If you take Flovent and have a hard time breathing, get swelling or a rash, these are serious side effects that require emergency health care.
These two medications share a lot in common. They are both made to help with breathing problems from asthma and COPD as well as certain other breathing problems. They each affect the lungs so that the airways are clearer, and breathing is easier. They are both available in inhalers with metered doses. Both can help with asthma symptoms like chest tightness and wheezing. Both are prescription-only medications that have an effect on the lungs and come in different dosages.

No matter which of these medications you have been prescribed, or if you have both of them, always follow the doctor’s orders for taking your doses. Taking too much or too little can cause problems. Know how many puffs to take and when to take them so that you don’t take them too often. Too much of these medications can exacerbate the side effects.
