Temperature-sensitive travel cases are sometimes specifically made for this use – such as Frio products.
Patients can also use ice packs to help keep the medication cold. However, they should make sure to wrap their pens in a pouch or cloth if they choose to do so. This will help keep the medication from accidentally freezing by making direct contact with the ice pack.
Wegovy should never be left in the glove compartment – even if it is briefly. Medications like Wegovy should never be left in the car for long periods of time unattended. Even being left in the car for short durations while it is parked can allow interior temperatures to reach unsafe limits for the medication.
The manufacturer recommends that patients flying with Wegovy keep the medication in their carry-on luggage to make sure the medication does not accidentally freeze or become damaged in the baggage compartment. Temperatures in the cargo hold are more likely to become too hot or too cold for the medication.
Patients will also have to prepare to take their medication through TSA. Injectable medications may be taken in carry-on bags after going through security screening. The medication will also need to have clear labeling and accompanying documentation proving it is the passenger’s prescription. This documentation is also beneficial in case security has any questions. Airline security may ask for a pharmacy label or a doctor’s note confirming the prescription name matches the passenger. Patients who are taking a trip longer than 28 days should plan to have extra pens available or arrange refills at their destination.
