Humalog is a prescription rapid-acting insulin that contains insulin lispro. It comes in multiple forms, including pens, cartridges, and vials.
Humalog is used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with diabetes.
Humalog replaces insulin your body is missing or isn’t using effectively. It helps move glucose from the blood into your cells for energy, helping lower blood sugar.

Humalog belongs to the rapid-acting insulin analog class. It’s designed to act faster than regular human insulin and is better for mealtime dosing.
Humalog usually starts to work within about 15 minutes and continues to lower blood sugar for around 3 to 5 hours. Other Humalog versions may last longer.
Peak action for this medication usually occurs about 30-90 minutes after injection. The exact duration may vary.
Humalog (insulin lispro) and NovoLog (insulin aspart) are both rapid-acting insulins designed to manage blood sugar levels around mealtimes. Some of the main differences are that Novolog starts working in about five to 10 minutes – instead of about 15 minutes after injection – and they contain different active ingredients.
The most common ones include low blood sugar and injection‐site reactions or changes to the skin or fat at the injection site. Other frequently reported side effects may include swelling in the hands or feet and an increase in weight.
Patients should not use this medication if they have symptoms of low blood sugar or are allergic to the medication’s ingredients. They should also avoid taking the medication if they have been instructed by their healthcare provider to use a different insulin regimen. Patients should always discuss the use of this medication with their doctor before starting.
