Vistaril has multiple uses. It reduces central nervous system activity and acts as an antihistamine. It’s often used to treat patients who are having tension and anxiety, and it does this by calming the nervous system. The antihistamine action works to help when someone is having allergy problems. When a patient has an allergy, it creates histamines in the body. This medication can reduce the effects of histamines in the body so that there are fewer symptoms like hives or itching on the skin.
As a sedative, it’s sometimes given to patients along with other medications during general anesthesia as well as afterward. It may also be taken by patients regularly for anxiety or on an as-needed basis when they have episodes of anxiety. It may also be prescribed for other issues like nausea vomiting and rashes.

Medication Overview
Vistaril (hydroxyzine) is a type of antihistamine that is often used for anxiety treatment. This short-term prescription medication can also sometimes be used for treating other issues like managing itchiness related to allergy issues. It may also be prescribed to help with relaxation or as a sedative surrounding surgery.

Dosage & How to Use Vistaril
Different doses of Vistaril may be prescribed based on the specific condition being treated and the age of the patient.
For Anxiety and Tension
Adult patients using this medication for anxiety or tension may be prescribed between 50 mg and 100 mg taken up to 4 times daily. Children above age six may be prescribed between 50 mg and 100 mg per day – divided into multiple smaller doses. Children younger than this age are usually prescribed 50 mg per day (also divided into smaller daily doses).
For Itching and Allergic Conditions
Adult patients may be prescribed 25 mg taken three or four times daily for itching or allergic conditions. Children above age six may be prescribed 50 mg to 100 mg per day (divided into smaller doses) and children under six years old are typically prescribed 50 mg per day. These are also divided into smaller doses.
For Use as a Sedative
Adult patients may be given 50 mg to 100 mg when this medication is being used as a sedative. Children using this medication as a sedative are usually prescribed 0.6 mg per kilogram of body weight.
Oral Suspension
Vistaril is also available as an oral suspension (25 mg hydroxyzine hydrochloride per 5 mL). This form is typically prescribed when patients have difficulty swallowing capsules or require more precise dose adjustments – particularly for children. Patients using this form of the medication should shake the bottle vigorously until the product is completely resuspended before each use to make sure an accurate dose is being given. They should also make sure to use a proper measuring device or syringe to measure each dose.
This medication is to be taken orally at the routine times each day that are prescribed by a doctor. Missed doses should be taken as soon as the patient remembers (as long as it is not almost time for their next dose). Extra medication should not be taken to make up for any missed doses. Contact your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve or if side effects occur.

Precautions & Warnings (Safety Information)
QT prolongation and Torsade de Pointes have been reported in cases of patients using the medication. Hydroxyzine should be used with caution in people who have heart problems or conditions that affect heart rhythm – such as long QT syndrome (or a family history of it) or irregular heartbeat. They should also be cautious about using this medication if they have had a recent heart attack, heart failure, or a slow heart rate.
Vistaril has occasionally been linked to a serious skin condition known as acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis. However, this in uncommon. Patients should stop taking this medication and contact their doctor right away if they notice a new rash or worsening skin irritation. They should also do this if they are experiencing any signs of an allergic reaction. This medication should not be restarted if AGEP is suspected.
It is not yet known if Vistaril passes into human breast milk. This means that this medication has not been found to be safe for use in nursing mothers. This medication has also shown to cause fetal harm in animal tests. Alcohol should also be avoided when using this medication (as it may increase the likelihood of severe drowsiness or falls).
This medication is also contraindicated in patients with:
- A prolonged QT interval
- Previous hypersensitivity to any of the contents of this medication
- Hypersensitivity to cetirizine hydrochloride or levocetirizine hydrochloride
Inform your doctor about any previous conditions or medications you are taking before starting Vistaril.

Side Effects
Some of the most common side effects of Vistaril include dry mouth, feelings of drowsiness, or having a headache. Other mild side effects that may occur for patients taking this medication include:
- Weakness
- Constipation
- Fatigue
- Itching
- Skin rash
- Low blood pressure
- Hives
These side effects should go away on their own within a few days or a few weeks. Side effects such as rash should still be reported to a doctor. Side effects that last longer or become severe should be reported to and discussed with the patient’s doctor.
More serious side effects sometimes occur in rare cases. These include:
- Tremors/convulsions
- Long QT syndrome
- Hallucinations
- Severe skin reactions
- Allergic reactions (may be indicated by swelling or difficulty breathing)
Patients experiencing these serious side effects should contact medical care right away – especially if they are showing signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Drug Interactions
Patients should let their doctor know about any other drugs or supplements they are taking before starting Vistaril. Some of the most common drug interactions known with this medication include opioids – may increase symptoms of confusion and drowsiness – and sedatives – which can also lead to severe drowsiness.
Vistaril has already been linked to causing QT prolongation in rare cases in some studies. Taking this medication with other medications that also impact the rhythm of the heart – such as amiodarone (Pacerone) – may increase the chances of this occurring. These drugs should only be used together with caution and under a doctor’s approval. Some antibiotics may also increase the chances of this. These include:
- Levofloxacin
- Clarithromycin
- Moxifloxacin (Avelox)
- Erythromycin (Ery-Tab)
- Azithromycin (Zithromax)
- Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
Antipsychotic medications have also been linked to causing QT prolongation and should be discussed with a doctor before combining with Vistaril. The same goes for medications like Escitalopram (Lexapro) and citalopram (Celexa). Patients should also avoid taking other antihistamines with Vistaril. Doing so can increase the risk of side effects or lead to more severe side effects like seizures or cardiac arrest in some extreme cases.
Storage and Handling
Patients using the capsule version of the medication should store their medication below 86°F (or 30°C) in its light-resistant container with the cap on tight. Patients using the oral suspension version of the medication should store their medication at a temperature between 68°F and 77°F (or between 20°C and 25°C). MyRx Outlet carefully ships each medication to patients’ homes in the appropriate packaging to make sure the medication remains intact and at the right temperature.

How long does it take for Vistaril to leave the body?
This medication has a half-life of about 20 hours and usually fully leaves the patient’s system in about 100 hours. The exact timing may vary by patient.

The onset of action is usually experienced within 15 to 30 minutes after the medication is taken. Its effects may last several hours after this.
Can Vistaril help you sleep?
Yes. This medication has sedative properties. It can also help with anxiety that may make it harder for patients to sleep.

This medication is meant to be taken only short term. The effects of using this medication for longer than four months have not yet been clinically tested for safety.

Alcohol use should be avoided during treatment with this medication. Combining the two can increase the risk of extreme drowsiness or dizziness/loss of coordination. Patients who have just stopped taking the medication should wait until the medication leaves their system before consuming alcohol.

Vistaril is not recommended during pregnancy. Tests in animals have shown that Vistaril could possibly cause fetal harm.

Both are antihistamines. However, they are also not the same. Vistaril lasts longer and requires a prescription. Benadryl does not last as long and can be found over-the-counter. This medication also does not have FDA approval for the treatment of anxiety.
